Reducing Anxiety through Mindfulness

Common activities to reduce anxiety and stress and increase calm and mindfulness include breathing techniques, yoga positions, and sitting or walking meditation. Practice the breathing exercise here to begin reducing anxiety and becoming mindful. Remember it’s relaxing; don’t make it hard! Do the best you can; don’t let the suggested numbers create a competition with yourself.

  1. Get Ready: sit up, back straight, tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth and keep it there through the exercise.

  2. Begin: exhale through your mouth with a whoosh sound; close your mouth and inhale through your nose to the count of 4; hold your breath for the count of 7; exhale through your mouth to a count of 8 making a whoosh sound. Repeat the steps 4 more times. If you feel dizzy or light-headed, breathe more easily at first and repeat fewer times. Be sure to relax your shoulders while you practice your breathing.

  3. Use this several times during the day, before you sleep at night, or whenever your mind wanders to situations that create anxiety.  Oh, and have fun!

Know Yourself

Tips here will help you begin exploring where you will fit in the job market.

  • First, I recommend starting a journal or a diary, which can be online if you prefer, so you can keep track of your thoughts about your journey.

  • Second, if you use a computer, I suggest organizing your informational websites into a folder and leaving it on your computer desktop. Also if you clip articles or ads, I suggest you keep a paper file also.

  • Third, If you need to sharpen your computer skills, check for classes at your local library or community center.

  • Fourth, keep up with your mindfulness activities!
